How do I keep my American Airlines AAdvantage miles from expiring?

You can extend the expiration date of your miles simply by earning or redeeming points.

Earn points by dining out

Dining out is the easiest way to extend the expiration date on your miles. Sign up for an account at AAdvantage Dining and register both your frequent flyer number and your credit cards with American Airlines. Then search for a local restaurant that offers miles for simply dining there. The exact amount of points you receive depends on your membership type:

Members earn 1 AAdvantage mile per $2 spent if you elect to not receive email communication from AAdvantage Dining program.

Online Members earn 3 AAdvantage miles per $1 spent if you elect to receive email communication from AAdvantage Dining program.

VIP Members earn 5 AAdvantage miles per $1 spent if you elect to receive email communication from AAdvantage Dining program AND have 12 or more qualified dining transactions in a calendar year.

Here at Platinum Flyer, we’ve found that eating at Wendy’s is the cheapest way to earn a mile. How about pick up a small classic chocolate Frosty for just a buck to extend your miles expiration date by 18 months?

Other ways of extending the expiration date of your points include:

  • Book a flight with American Airlines
  • Buy enough miles to earn your next flight reward
  • Use a branded AAdvantage credit card to make a purchase
  • Shop at AAdvantage eShopping mall
  • Redeem your miles for a reward
